Serpent and Sphinx
Two edges, one riddle
By the second night the trees had closed into a mind of their own. The path narrowed. The moonlight arrived in pieces. Alethea felt watched in the way a person feels watched when the watcher is not trying to hide. From a cedar's roots a serpent uncoiled, not a farm snake, not a storybook dragon, but a long intelligence wearing scales. Its eyes held the old heat. Its voice, when it came, was not a hiss so much as a verdict rolled like distant thunder.
Why do you seek the Mirror, mortal? Do you not know that truth is a double-edged sword? It can heal. It can also destroy.
Alethea did not step back. She had lived her whole short life inside that sentence without having heard it spoken. I seek it not for power, she said, but for the light it brings. I want the lies stripped off the places where deceit has made suffering look like weather. If the sword has two edges, I will learn which edge is for cutting rot and which is for cutting flesh.
The serpent tasted the air. Mortals always say that, it replied. Then they discover they enjoy the second edge more. Go on, then. The mountain is full of your kind of courage. It is also full of their bones.
It let her pass. Mercy, in a guardian, often looks like curiosity.
On the third day the trees broke and she came down into a valley the color of late honey. Olives. Dry grass. A road that looked older than the men who claimed to have built it. At the far side a sphinx of pale limestone sat as if the valley had grown a thought. Lion body. Folded wings. A face that had learned patience the hard way. It did not leap. It asked, which is a more serious violence.
Name what a person becomes, said the sphinx, when they can no longer lie to themselves.
The wind offered empty. The grass offered free. A lesser seeker, in another century, would have said nothing, and that answer is not wrong. Alethea stood in the gold dust and felt the question land in the part of her that had already cost her friends.
Responsible, she said.
The sphinx's stone lids lowered a fraction, which in that creature is a standing ovation. Empty is a mood. Free is a poster. Responsible is an office. You may go on. But hear this. The Mirror lies beyond, in a cave that keeps the spirits of those who sought it before you. They will not test your cleverness. They will test whether you can stand what you asked for. Most cannot. They wanted a weapon. They found an account. The account ate them.
Alethea thanked it, which surprised the valley. Gratitude is a form of accuracy. She took the higher path, where the air thinned and the pine gave way to rock that remembered ice. With each step the pull grew — not a magnet's pull, not a lover's. The pull of a name walking toward the object that will make the name expensive to keep.
She did not feel brave. Bravery is a story you tell afterward. She felt aligned, which is rarer, and colder.
I did not come to own the light. I came to stop pretending the dark was a kindness.
