A moonlit forest path winding toward a cave mouth rimmed with gold in the mountainside

The Night Road

Athena at the edge of the trees

The vision came on a night when the village had put out its lamps and the mountain had not. Alethea woke as if a hand had opened in her chest. The room was ordinary. The air was not. Grey-eyed Athena stood in it without bothering to look like a statue. Wisdom, when it arrives, does not always arrive gently. It arrives like a decision that has already been made in a higher court.

The goddess of the city-craft did not offer a speech. She held, or seemed to hold, a disk of metal that was not yet the Mirror and was already the Mirror: a round of bronze whose rim ran in the old meander, the Greek key, the path that turns and turns and never admits it is lost. In its face there was not a girl's reflection. There was a living eye of gold, an iris of fire, concentric rings like a law written in light.

Use it wisely, said Athena, and the sentence was not a blessing so much as a warning filed in advance. Truth is a tool. It is also a burden. A tool in a fool's hand is a wound looking for a body. A burden in a proud back is a throne that will crush the one who sits on it.

Alethea did not kneel. She recognized the instrument the way a river recognizes the sea. Athena, who is midwife to crafts, had brought the first bronze into reach. That did not make Athena the owner. It made her the one who understood that even an original office must be received, not merely seized.

By morning the village would have dressed itself for a festival it did not deserve. Alethea did not stay to be celebrated for a gift she had not yet earned by walking. She took a cloak, a knife, bread, a flask of water, and the knowledge she already had, which was more dangerous than the knife. Under moonlight she found the path that left the last goat-pen and entered the trees as if the forest had been waiting with its mouth open.

The night road is always the same road, in every century. It is the road you take when remaining would turn your name into decoration. Crickets. Cold dust. The smell of resin. Behind her, the village slept inside its ordinary lies and did not know it had just lost the person who made those lies expensive. Ahead, Parnassus rose like a fact.

She walked until the lamps of home were a rumor. She walked until her own breath was the loudest honest thing in the dark. She did not pray for safety. Safety is a cousin of soothing, and she had already chosen the other family. She prayed, if the word still applies, for accuracy: that she would not use the coming glass as a weapon for her pride, and that she would not refuse it out of fear dressed up as humility.

The forest received her without applause. That, too, was accurate.

I left with almost nothing, which is the correct luggage for a law.
