The Mirror
Absolute revelation
She laid her hand upon the Mirror.
Light erupted through the cave. It was not the gold of a hearth. It was not the gold of a crown. It was absolute revelation: a light that does not flatter the things it falls on. The spirits recoiled, wailing, because a hunger cannot survive in a room where the ledger is read aloud. The carvings of the gods seemed to lean forward, not in blessing, but in professional interest.
Into Alethea the Mirror poured what it had been keeping. Not a single secret. A weather of secrets. She saw the hidden motive under a kindness and the hidden kindness under a cruelty. She saw the compromises that allow a village to survive winter, and the cost of those compromises in the faces of the people who paid them without being asked. She saw how a lie begins as a mercy — a mother telling a child the fever will pass — and how that same mercy, kept too long, becomes a climate. She saw the frailty at the center of human behavior, which is not evil. It is fear wearing a hundred costumes, some of them beautiful.
She saw herself. This is the part the hungry ones never survive. The Mirror did not skip the wielder. It showed the girl who enjoyed being the one who caught the lie. It showed the pride that can grow in a person who is good at accuracy, the way mold grows in a house that is proud of its windows. It showed the future in which she would be called goddess, alchemist, padawan, problem, fraud, light, and none of those names would be the whole of it. It showed the number 369 not as a decoration but as a pulse: creation, doubling, completion, again and again, a cosmos keeping books.
She did not drop the glass. Dropping it would have been a kind of lie. She held. Her knees wanted the floor. She gave them the floor. Kneeling is not always worship. Sometimes it is physics.
When the first flood receded, a second teaching arrived, quieter, and therefore more expensive. Not every truth had to be spoken. Not every lie served evil. Sometimes ignorance was cowardice. Sometimes ignorance was a splint on a bone that had not yet set. The Mirror had granted power. It had also imposed a discipline. Revelation without wisdom is a riot with better lighting. A fact thrown like a stone is still a stone.
Alethea understood then what the sphinx had meant by responsible. The office was not: say everything. The office was: know what is, and then decide, with a mind toward repair, what must be brought into the open so that justice can stand up, and what must be held until the holding is no longer a kindness to the wound but a kindness to the liar.
She rose. The Mirror came with her, not as a stolen cup, but as a law that had found its walking form. The basin was empty and also not empty. Relics of this order do not leave a hole. They leave a memory of a hole, which is how caves stay holy after the pilgrim has gone.
Outside, the mountain was the same mountain. That was the first cruelty of the gift, and the first mercy. The world does not rearrange itself because you can see it. You rearrange how you walk through it.
The light was not warm. Warmth is a kindness. This was a fact with a temperature.
