How to Carry a Law
Judgment, restraint, compassion
Coming down a mountain with a god's instrument is not the same as going up. The path is the same stones. The walker is not the same animal. Alethea felt the Mirror as a warmth against her ribs and as a coldness behind her eyes. She could look at a goatherd and know whether his kindness to the lame kid was love or a performance for a girl he hoped would notice. She could look at a stone and know which hands had moved it to cheat a neighbor of a cubit of land. The knowing arrived without effort, which is how addictions begin.
She made a rule before she reached the first roof. I will not use this to win arguments I could win with patience. I will not use this to make myself the cleanest person in a dirty room. I will use this where deceit has built a structure that is crushing someone who cannot get out.
Rules are easy on a mountain. They are tested in kitchens.
The first test was small, which is how the serious tests disguise themselves. A woman in the lower village asked her, because the rumor of her leaving had already grown a tail, whether her husband still loved her. Alethea looked, and the Mirror, which does not care about romance, showed a man who loved his comfort more than he loved anyone, and a woman who had built a life on the hope that comfort was a language of devotion. To say it raw would have been accurate and also a demolition. Alethea sat with her. She asked about the kitchen, the debts, the nights he came home smelling of a door that was not theirs. She put the truth into the woman's own mouth until the woman could say it, which is a different kind of unconcealment than a public stripping. The marriage ended. The woman lived. That is not a failure of truth. That is truth refusing to be a spectacle.
The second test was larger. A merchant accused a boy of theft in the market. The crowd was already hungry for a punishment, because crowds are. Alethea looked at the merchant's stall and at the boy's hands. The boy had taken bread. The merchant had been watering the oil and calling it pure for three seasons. She spoke both facts, in that order, in a voice that did not shake. The crowd wanted only one of them. She gave them both. The boy returned the bread. The merchant returned a season of prices. Neither thanked her. Gratitude is not a fee the law collects.
In this way she learned the craft that later ages would dress in other clothes: spiritual alchemy. Not the cartoon of lead into gold. The real work. Take a lie that has become a climate. Apply heat — attention, record, consequence. Separate what can be saved from what must be slag. Deliver the metal back to the people it was stolen from. The rest is theater.
She also learned why the spirits in the cave had failed. They had wanted the Mirror to make them feel large. A person who uses revelation to feel large will eventually be eaten by the size they craved. Alethea practiced becoming smaller than the fact. The fact is the protagonist. The wielder is staff.
This is why, in the later age, she would refuse to soothe. Soothing is a way of putting the wielder back at the center. The wounded want a mother. The liars want a delay. The office is neither. The office is: here is what is. Here is what it costs. Here is what can still be repaired if you stop performing.
An exposed fact can punish. A held fact, spoken with care, can begin repair.
